More cronyism from Sparks Mayor Ed Lawson?

Okay, Picon will admit to sometimes being frustrated by Jenny Brekhus over these many years when she has taken us down the path of doing what is right for the City of Reno residents.

Is it frustrating listing to Councilmember Brekhus trying to hold us all to a higher standard, yes.

Is it exhausting, and sometimes you want to side with her foes, one wants to shout, “Jenny, can you just let it go.”  

Brekhus has been a champion of the residents of Reno since the day she was elected. No one can dispute that.

The case that was supposed to be heard in April 2024 regarding a lawsuit, filed by This Is Reno, attempting to gain access to less redacted sheriff’s report, sheriff’s body cam, etc. regarding former Reno City Manager Doug Thornley’s domestic violence incident call at his home on Skyline Blvd. in 2023 came to a screeching halt.

So, Sparks Mayor Ed Lawson... Where do we even start? This guy's mayoral skills are about as impressive as a participation trophy. It'd be funny if it wasn't so frustrating for Sparks residents who barely voted him in back in 2022. You'd think scraping by would make him step up his game, but nah – he's doubled down on the chaos. Enter: The Facebook drama.

Where’s the appeal?

You know the one Wendy Damonte promised us on July 24, 2024, after the Washoe Open Space and Regional Parks Commission voted against the soccer stadium at South Valley’s Regional Park. Spunky, former television anchor, Wendy Damonte, bounded out of the Washoe Parks meeting and commented to the two television stations bivouacked in the county complex lobby, that “they expected this” and certainly illuded to the fact they would be moving forward with the next steps. The only “step” left for Damonte and Bob Enzenberger on behalf of For Our Fans Foundation is to appeal the Washoe Open Space and Regional Parks Commissioner’s decision to the Washoe County Commissioners.

The Reno City Charter Committee was questioned by Councilmember Reese regarding their suggestion of daring to want councilmembers elected by the voters instead of appointed by the Reno Mayor and City Council, when a seat is left vacant.

TMRPA = Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Agency Governing Board meeting was on August 10, 2024, and it was the usual boring group, they have so much apathy from their own board they barely had a quorum.

At first look, the video shows Sparks city officials awkwardly dancing — if clapping and jerky movements performed out of synch can pass for dancing — to celebrate the Fourth of July. Clearly, these bureaucrats can’t follow a beat. In fact, the beat eludes them entirely. It has fled in terror.

Back on July 29, 2024, the Reno City Charter Committee met with the Reno City Council with their final report and recommendations. The focus of the meeting was a report from the City Charter Committee and what to do with those pesky 2025 Bill Draft Requests to be put forth by the Reno City Council.

Picon sometimes is shocked by what City of Reno, City of Sparks, and Washoe County Government employees are called upon to do and we question why they do it.

Not at the City of Reno where there is almost no disclosure. Oh sure, at all the meetings often one of the councilmembers or mayor reads a disclosure statement, but we’ve had a difficult time remembering individuals not voting on an item because of a disclosed conflict.
