Gotta Love Jenny Brekhus

Okay, Picon will admit to sometimes being frustrated by Jenny Brekhus over these many years when she has taken us down the path of doing what is right for the City of Reno residents.

Is it frustrating listening to Councilmember Brekhus trying to hold us all to a higher standard, yes.

Is it exhausting, yes.

Sometimes you want to side with her foes, one wants to shout, “Jenny, can you just let it go.”

Brekhus has been a champion of the residents of Reno since the day she was elected. No one can dispute that.

On August 14, 2024, Jenny REALLY got it right when she called her fellow Reno City Council members out over the Community Assistance Center (CAC) when the city was discussing the RFP’s (Request for Proposals) that were received regarding development of the property.

Remember this is the building that former City Manager Doug Thornley decided to allow to become uninhabitable after it closed in 2020. The Nevada Independent reported, “a traditional shelter area with a capacity to host 135 people that features common areas and apartment units in addition to an overflow capacity of 40 people according to a presentation Reno’s Acting Assistant City Manager Arlo Stockham gave to CHAB.”

When the Nevada Cares Campus opened the City of Reno transitioned the residents to the Cares Campus and apparently locked the doors at the CAC, eventually shuttered the space, and then Reno City Manager Doug Thornley allowed the building to become uninhabitable.

The Reno City Council never asked Thornley why a city asset was allowed to fall into decay and not have occurrences such as a large water leak repaired. Why did city officials decide to throw away the key to the front door, and at the same time the financial value the taxpayers of Reno held in that building and land?

Brekhus came out swinging Wednesday, asking about an email Washoe County Commissioner Mike Clark had received regarding the CAC building from a county employee. We’ve got a copy of the email at the foot of the article.

The real question is who’s lying to Commissioner Mike Clark at Washoe County Government? Candee Ramos is ‘directed’ what she needs to tell Commissioner Clark, it’s not like she’s making this stuff up on her own, someone who outranks her has to be dictating these responses.

Were there conversations between the City of Reno and Washoe County about the building and the fact that Reno officials have a “different vision for the neighborhood.”  Hmm, what vision? Can they share it with all us silly residents, you know clue us in.

Is there collusion between the City of Reno and Washoe County regarding this building, you know, how they do not want the CAC building reopened to homeless services. The reason why the building was built.

Hey, Commissioner Clark, “take the gloves off” - you need to hire an attorney, have a whole lot of depositions with a whole bunch of folks about all these conversations that no one seems to have, or have any memory of, between the City of Reno and Washoe County, but a county employee was comfortable enough to put it in an email, after someone directed her to do so.

County Manger Eric Brown you’ve given a great gift to Commissioner Clark and created one major headache for the City of Reno at the very same time.
