Picon ponders the tit for tat of politics this season. Okay, we’ll take some of the heat because we can be petty and snarky too but is it simply too much this year? Do we have the wrong people in office? Too many appointed individuals?

As the dust settles after elections, it becomes clear that our elected officials are driven by the desire for re-election. Instead of prioritizing the needs of the constituents who elected them, they seem more focused on securing their next position to advance further in the political hierarchy.

In a surprising turn of events, Picon found themselves at the center of attention after posting a 2006 Temporary Restraining Order related to a Washoe County Commission District 4 candidate. The response was overwhelming, with a barrage of comments questioning our credibility, journalistic integrity, and fairness. Amidst the backlash, Picon noticed that some of the critics had less than honest Facebook accounts. Additionally, comments from a former candidate that took us to task, Randy Zachary, who later removed his comment after being confronted by Nevada Liberty.

Picon read Eddie Lorton’s opinion in the Reno Gazette Journal and were hit with the age-old issue of power going to people’s heads. And we don’t mean Eddie’s. When a mayor and councilmember start thinking they’re untouchable, it’s definitely a problem. As the City of Reno Mayor’s term gets nearer to ending day by day, the plots being floated to aid her, and her allies, to stay in power and stay relevant are interesting.

The Nevada Globe reported on November 2, 2023, the recall of two elected Trustees from the IVGID/Incline Village General Improvement District both failed to get the numbers of signatures needed for a special election. It was close, but there is no cigars in recall attempts. The petition lacked 75 signatures for Trustee Matthew Dent and 114 signatures for Trustee Sara Schmitz.

At the Special Meeting of the Washoe County Commission, the Washoe County Canvass of the Vote on Friday, February 16, 2024, we were surprised that there was no ‘early’ public comment on the agenda at the start of the meeting.

Commissioner Herman has been facing challenges with the current commission, despite the addition of Garcia and the appointment of Andriola. Picon finds it interesting that the commission, now consisting of four women and one man, continues to treat Commission Herman poorly, despite her tenure and experience. At a January 16, 2024, meeting, Hill, Garcia, and Andriola raised concerns about her competence, readiness, and ability to perform the duties of her role effectively and stopped her from gaining additional duties. This has led to questions about the dynamics and power struggles within the commission.
