Drama at City Hall: When Hillary Met Killjoy Kathleen

Move over, reality TV, for more City of Reno political theatre. The latest drama unfolding at Reno City Council has everything: surprise votes, heated exchanges, and an off-camera showdown that's got everyone talking.

Our story begins with Vice Mayor Kathleen "Killjoy" Taylor dropping a surprise "no" vote on Mayor Schieve's Redevelopment Board appointments. (You know, the board that's been collecting dust since 2017?) But wait - she was just warming up.

The Money Quote: Taylor then dropped this administrative bomb on the Planning Commission:

“Thank you, Madame Mayor I was going to talk about this under Item G1 but I think it might be more appropriate to do it here.

The role of the Planning Commission is to make review by city council easier not harder. in recent deliberations by the planning commission. I believe they have fallen woefully short by the standards of expected by the city council, myself in particular.

I would look to our city attorneys and city manager hopefully to improve the deliberations and decision making process of the planning commission. We expect a clean record and clear record to review any appeals, and to take action in matters reviewed by the planning commission; and I believe the applicants, the stakeholders, and the citizens deserve better.

Thank you, Madam Mayor.”

Behind the scenes:

  • Poor City Manager Jackie Bryant got whiplash playing mediator between Schieve and Taylor

  • City Attorney Karl Hall had to remind a fumbling and fuming Schieve about public comment

  • The real fireworks allegedly started when the cameras stopped rolling

Jackie Bryant ping-ponging between Vice Mayor Kathleen Taylor and Mayor Hillary Schieve.

Word on the street is that once the cameras went dark, Schieve and Taylor had themselves a good old-fashioned dais dispute before taking their disagreement backstage to the break room. Apparently, the honeymoon period for Mayor and Vice Mayor is officially over.

Is this all because someone dared to say "no" to Killjoy Kathleen? Or is there more to the story?

Got the inside scoop on the Hillary-Kathleen showdown? Drop us a line - we'll keep your name out of it, but Reno needs to know.

Just a thought, Taylor must remember, she’ll lose this battle If there is one) in the court of public opinion. Mayor Hillary Schieve has always had one thing going for her over the last 14 years, she is extremely likable, and frankly, Taylor is not.
