The Never-Ending Stevenson Street Saga
What started as a street abandonment in September 2024 has turned into Reno's longest-running political circus, starring our freshly-minted Vice Mayor Kathleen Taylor, who squeaked into office by the skin of her teeth. Hence, why this abandonment has taken so long, can’t let voters know Taylor is the darling of developers.
Fun fact: Taylor even managed to charm the Washoe County Republican Party into an endorsement. Talk about a magic trick. Picon ponders if she would have won against the very Democratic Frank Perez without it. We know of a few Republicans who leaned they were duped who want their votes back.
Now that Taylor's safely tucked into her four-year term, surely this developer's dream could finally come true, right? Not yet. Enter stage left: Naomi "I've Got Bigger Political Fish to Fry" Duerr, whose marathon monologues could cure insomnia. Seriously, her speeches should come with a warning label: "May cause extreme drowsiness. Do not operate heavy machinery while listening."
But here's the really juicy part: What's that deafening silence about the property being sold? Thanks to Our Town Reno for pulling back the curtain on this theatrical production the sale of MOD 2 that was posted on all their social media.
Our dynamic duo of Taylor and Duerr seem to have developed a mysterious case of selective amnesia when it comes to that teensy-weensy detail. Transparency? Sorry, that's not in this season's script.
Wait, there is a MOD 1 (the old, converted Riviera Hotel) and a MOD 2 that CBRE sold. Is the Stevenson Street abandoned staying with MOD 1? We’re going to assume so, and as we already know the street is going to be abandoned to the developer, Duerr all but announced it at the city council meeting, but hey, how clearing up the question. Reassure residents.
Let's not forget our new favorite supporting actor, lobbyist John Krmpotic, registered with the City of Reno, who appears at council meetings with all the confidence of a chihuahua in a thunderstorm. His client list? Now that's some interesting reading material.
Stay tuned, folks - this show's far from over, and we're just warming up our filing fingers for those record requests of conversations between Mr. Krmpotic and the Reno City Councilmembers.
