Mother Goose Might Ask: How much porn could a homeless person watch, if a homeless person could watch porn?

Picon remembers the Sparks Library controversy involving The clash arose when Mayor Smith attempted to prevent the first Drag Queen Story Hour at the library, sparking a feud with Director Scott. This incident raised questions about Mr. Scott’s humanity since Mayor Smith was terribly ill at the time, battling cancer, passing away in 2020. This was the start of an ongoing feud with Jeff Scott vs A Whole Lot of Folks that continues to this day. Picon thinks it was this feud that cost Scott the WC-1 ballot measure loss.

Greater Reno/Mark Robison did some due diligence at the request of The Education Crusade, regarding why you can watch porn at the Washoe County Libraries but cannot watch porn at the Clark County Libraries. We question the whole “grant” issue and ponder why Clark County gets the same grants as Washoe County, but Library Director Jeff Scott professes they cannot limit access to the internet. If they do they will not receive the grants they needed to bring high speed internet to the Gerlach Library at a cost of $2.3 million. Frankly we’re not going to spend the amount of time needed to track down grant disclosures and limitations, but someone with more time than we sure should.

Library Tax Fail: When Overconfidence Meets Underwhelming Effort

Oh, the delicious irony of a library measure that turned into a master class in "How Not to Run a Campaign 101."

Let's unpack this comedy of errors, shall we? WC-1's failure has everyone pointing fingers faster than a speed-reading contest. Some blame the "poorly written" bill (though apparently three passionate experts crafted it). Others are convinced the Washoe County Republican Party's "new tax" warning was the killer blow - though giving Bruce Parks that much strategic credit is like assuming a cat pretending that face-plant into the coffee table was totally intentional.

A Love Letter to Our Tipsters

One of “tipsters” sent us this Nevada Commission on Ethics Order of Dismissal regarding Washoe County Library Director Jeff Scott. Can someone please track down the Confidential Letter of Instruction? We also urge whoever made this complaint to maybe drop us a line and let us know the basis of the complaint.

Washoe County Libraries: From Safe Havens to Staging Grounds for Fear

These signs are posted throughout our Washoe County libraries, thus it must have the approval of Library Director Jeff Scott. Has Scott gotten permission from the Washoe County Library Trustees to post this signage to instill confusion and stress for Washoe County residents of less library hours, less days open, less library employees, etc.

Remember when libraries were sanctuaries of learning and hope? Places where children discovered magical worlds and seniors found quiet comfort? Today, in Washoe County, something has changed.

While Herb Kaplan from the District Attorney's office keeps a less-than-watchful eye over Library Director Jeff Scott's decisions, our community's cherished spaces are being transformed into billboards of anxiety. The question echoing through our reading rooms: Why?

Jeff Scott’s Budget Crisis

Are the widely publicized "budget cuts" at the Washoe County Library System as severe as portrayed? Executive Director Jeff Scott's warnings about losing 22 staff members, cutting hours, and other dire consequences deserve closer scrutiny. Are his comments factual? We don’t know.

Despite knowing the $4.5 million in funding was at risk, there's been no transparent sharing of budget analyses or alternative scenarios from Executive Director Scott. While Scott controls the system's messaging and media narrative, taxpayers and library patrons remain in the dark about actual financial planning.

The Library Should Be Nonpartisan.

Tuesday, November 19, 2024, during the Washoe County Board of County Commission meeting we were struck by the number of public commentators regarding the loss of the Washoe County Library WC-1 Ballot Measure.

It is interesting to note the group behind the library petition is not even taking a break to draw breath to learn what cuts in staffing or services will be necessary if the library loses the $4.5 million funding afforded them prior to the ballot measure failure. The library just needs the money, but this is based on what Library Director Jeff Scott is saying.

AAUGH!!! -WC1 Failed

You’re kidding, right? Voters didn’t understand the ballot measure, oh come on. Now you’re insulting voters intelligence.

Voters understood exactly what they were voting for, and vote they did to defeat the WC1.

The library smackdown continues as Director Jeff Scott's doomsday predictions - shuttered buildings, mass staff exodus, and a limited-day workweek - fall flat after WC1's surprise defeat. His confident choir of supporters, who practically had the victory party planned, are now oddly quiet. One burning question remains: In all that time spent working on passing WC1, was there no worst-case scenarios, did anyone bother drafting a Plan B?

June = Library Trustee Time at Washoe County

Remember back on June 20, 2023, when there were twenty applicants for the appointment of a Washoe County Library Board Trustee. After having to hear Appointed Commissioner Clara Andriola drone on about how she contacted each applicant we were close to a boredom included coma.

The Kids Table

Picon was having a difficult time understanding these folks’ frustrations, so we decided to ask for some public records. It took a while to gain access, but we only needed to receive one email and it basically explained EVERYTHING. Remember when you were young and forced to sit at the ‘kids table’ during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter – all you wanted to do was move to the adult’s table. It is the same with the residents who are speaking at the commission meetings about the library, they want to communicate with the library trustees and not with the Library Director Jeff Scott.
