How Many Times Can Renoites Wallets Be Drained?
The Reno City Council will vote on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, to add an additional Storm Drain Fee. This is triple taxation. Residents already pay for Storm Drain through the Capitalization Fund which is nearly one-third of the Sewer Bill. Everyone in Washoe County is paying one-half of 1/8% of sales tax to Flood Management which can be used for storm drains, storm water, and emergency managers. The other half of that tax went to Reno’s ReTrac (oh, the memories).
Where has this Flood Management money been spent?
Over $50 million on the University of Nevada Reno Farm/Coop Farm/Edison area at Mill and McCarran. $18 to $20 million went to the Virginia Street bridge, which had an engineers’ estimate at $12 million.
$10 million went to the North Truckee Drain in Sparks.
$3.5 million for the Indian Colony Floodwall and Levee.
And, finally, a chunk went to the Nature Conservancy for downtown restoration projects.
It appears that while this is a county wide tax, Washoe County has not claimed much of it. Which begs on to query if the taxpayers in Incline Village or Gerlach should be fighting mad.
If this is implemented, Renoites should demand a lower Sewer Fee. After all, how many times is a person supposed to pay for the same thing.
We’ve been awaiting public records and have been put off until this vote will be over. The Reno City Council should know better, we will profile this unfair fee.
