The new Washoe School’s teacher’s union president has had some run-ins with the law

Within public records, Picon Press has located some interesting information regarding the new union president for the Washoe County School District teachers union. Calen Evans, who also lists himself as the President of Empower Nevada Teachers, has appeared on television spots and YouTube videos advocating for better funding and change within the district. While indiscretions in youth are not uncommon, it appears Calen Evans was arrested following a traffic stop with marijuana, a dirty phone and a large amount of cash; hardly a minor brush with the law.

In 2006, while driving in Incline Village, he was involved in a crash and the deputy smelled marijuana coming from the car. At the time, marijuana possession was a felony in Nevada and this was not his first arrest for drug related offenses.  During the 2006 event, Calen Evans was arrested following a search of his car.  The deputy found a black backpack with three bags of marijuana and a wad of cash. The deputy also reported finding a cell phone with a text message from a presumed customer, asking for an “eighth.”  The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) task force came in and seized the cash, totaling $4637.00, alleging it was the proceeds of drug sales.

Calen’s mother would later file and affidavit stating that all of the money was a result of her filtering cash to her son, over the period of a year, for his college education and that he was driving to Quincy to pay the rent when the accident occurred. We reviewed the affidavit and exhibits and for some reason there are no dates on the signature lines of the lease agreement, which was used to bolster her position that her son was in possession of over $4000.00 to pay for school and rent. Ultimately, the State agreed to a settlement wherein Calen was returned half of the money and each party had to pay their own attorney fees.

Picon Press would note that at the time of this arrest, his mother owned a home near Rancho San Rafeal Park in Reno, NV. Based on the affidavit, it appears that Calen would have lived with her. We are not sure how driving to Quincy, CA would be reasonable via Incline Village. We reached out for comment and Calen Evans responded, “no comment.”

Additionally, Calen Evans has the following records from Reno Justice Court and Reno Municipal Court: 2005, possession of drug paraphernalia, 2006, failure to use due care, 2010, no insurance and expired registration, 2014, unlawful use of cell phone device, 2016, driving without a license in possession, 2017, speeding, 2020, speeding and 2020 failure to wear a seat belt and no proof of insurance.
