Hey Readers, We Need Your Insight
Thanks to our community's enthusiastic response, Picon's inbox has been overflowing with inquiries about local nonprofits since spring. While election season kept us running at full speed, the closing of the polls finally gives us the breathing room to dive into all the valuable information you've shared. We're now ready to give your submissions the attention they deserve.
Some elected officials have dubbed us 'lazy journalists' as we’ve been covering their activities since we’ve been willing to include other media’s coverage. Well, let's embrace that reputation - we're actively seeking nonprofit whistleblowers to help us be even more 'lazy' by sharing your inside knowledge. Based on the flood of tips we've already received; we know you're out there. Consider this your invitation to help us dig deeper into stories that need telling. After all, the best investigative journalism is a team sport."
A couple of questions we’ve been sent in the last week from readers:
Nevada Military Support Alliance has former City of Reno Code Enforcement Director Alex Woodley on their board as treasurer. Our reader stated they found it, “Interesting a military support group seems to be okay with sexting on a government issued phone.” We’ve send an inquiry but not heard back.
Truckee Meadows Tomorrow is advertising their 2024-2026 Community Progress Report – the tickets to the event are $25.00. One of our readers didn’t know much about the nonprofit and did a little dig into what they do.
Washoe County Government approved a Community Support Grant of $50,000 in February 2024. Our reader found it interesting that a data driven group in the Truckee Meadows, funded by government, businesses, and residents has their taxes prepared by someone in Washington. It would be nice to keep the money local. It looks like their former tax preparer was in Incline Village two years ago.
Karma Box Project, we have dozens of questions from readers. The only tax return we can find is 2022. We cannot find 2023, which we find interesting since they had their nonprofit status revoked due to missing these filing deadlines. Picon finds it equally interesting via ProPublica something seems to have happened to 2021, 2020, and 2019 tax returns. Karma Box received funds from the City of Reno, City of Sparks, and Washoe County during those years.
We will reach out to the City of Reno to learn if Reno City Attorney, Karl Hall, is still a member of their board, and for how long he served on Karma Box Project.
Think some local nonprofits need a closer look? If you've got insider intel about Northern Nevada's charitable organizations that doesn't pass the smell test, we want to hear it. Whether you've spotted questionable spending, dubious dealings, or just something that doesn't add up - drop us a line. Your insights could help shed light where it's needed most.
